Billing Suspension Upon Shutdown

Last Updated At: 2026-08-14 08:08:00

Scenarios

Billing suspension upon shutdown means you will not be charged for CPU and memory after pay-as-you-go instances enter shutdown status through a shutdown operation. Components such as cloud disks (system disks and data disks), public network bandwidth, and images will still be billed.

Use Limits

Billing suspension upon shutdown only applies to pay-as-you-go instances whose system disks and data disks are both cloud disks.
The feature does not apply to the following scenarios:
Instances are started up and shut down within the instances.
Instances are equipped with local disks.
Instances are shut down due to overdue payment. The billing for the instances and associated resources stops after they are shut down due to overdue payment. Computing resources and public IP addresses will be released. The billing will resume if the account balance becomes positive after a top-up.
For instance types that support pay-as-you-go three-tier pricing, the accumulation of usage time for the three-tier pricing is suspended during the billing suspension period. After the instances are restarted, the accumulation resumes from where it left off before the instances are shut down.
If a batch shutdown operation involves instances that are eligible for billing suspension upon shutdown and others that are not, then:
Instances that support billing suspension upon shutdown will not be charged for CPU and memory after shutdown.
Instances that do not support billing suspension upon shutdown will continue to be normally charged after shutdown.

Impact After Enabling the Feature

After billing suspension upon shutdown is enabled, the following effects occur when an instance is shut down:
Since the CPU and memory of the instance will be released, restarting the instance may fail due to insufficient resources. In this case, you can try restarting the instance later. If it still fails, you may attempt to adjust the instance configuration.
If the instance has been assigned a public IP address, the public IP address will be automatically released after shutdown, which may cause the instance to fail upon restart. After a successful restart, the instance will be assigned a new public IP address, while the private IP address remains unchanged. To prevent changes to the public IP address, you can convert the public IP address to an EIP address before shutting down the instance. For an instance bound to an EIP address, the EIP address is retained after shutdown and remains upon restart. No idle fees will be charged for the EIP address during the shutdown period.
During the shutdown period, operations (such as adjusting disks, modifying network configurations, reinstalling the system, restarting instances, and resetting passwords) cannot be performed. If these operations are required, please perform them after starting the instance.
When Ops operations such as configuration adjustment, disk modification, or system reinstallation are performed, the instance must be shut down. During shutdown, the billing suspension upon shutdown policy is not applied.

Operation Steps

  1. Log in to the CVM console.
  2. On the instance management page, you can shut down one or multiple instances at a time as needed:
    • Shut down a single instance: Proceed according to the actually used view mode.
      • List view: Select the instances to be shut down, and then choose More > Instance Status > Shutdown in the operation column on the right side.
    • Shut down multiple instances: Select all instances to be shut down and click Shutdown at the top of the list.
  3. In the pop-up Shutdown window, you can select the Shutdown Mode as needed.
To avoid charges during shutdown, select CVM No Charge When Shutdown and click OK.
